California Bald Eagle Jackie Dies After Intensive Treatment

Jackie, the online‑star bald eagle that captured hearts across the nation, died Monday while receiving weeks of veterinary care in California. The bird had been brought to the Ojai Raptor Center after a deadly encounter with other raptors, and suffered from anemia and severe weight loss that complicated her recovery.

The outbreak of costly treatments and the persistent collaboration of veterinary specialists could not reverse Jackie’s declining health, the center declared. She had a loyal following from the Big Bear Valley nest cam run by Friends of Big Bear Valley, an account that documented her life since hatching in spring 2012.

The Ojai Raptor Center expressed deep grief and pledged to provide a more comprehensive statement in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Jackie’s remains are now under custody of the state department.
