On Monday, the family of polarising conservative activist Charlie Kirk confronted his alleged killer in a preliminary hearing at the Utah County courthouse.
Prosecutors laid out evidence against 23‑year‑old Tyler Robinson, charging him with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice and witness tampering.
Robinson has yet to enter a plea; Utah County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
The family, consisting of husband’s widow Erika, parents Robert and Kathryn and sister Mary, released a statement before the proceedings: Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend and father; every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children.
The family also said they remain grateful for the support, prayers and kindness received during these dark days, and requested privacy as they navigate the process.
Defense attorneys had previously attempted to suppress evidence, ban cameras and remove the death‑penalty option, but courts dismissed these requests.
Prosecutors also announced that four law‑enforcement witnesses would testify during the day.
The hearing is scheduled to run through Friday, with the family attending separately on Monday.
